The news was announced by Ford Performance GM Will Ford at Ford Australia’s centenary celebration in Melbourne today.
The Mustang Cup will follow in the footsteps of the same one-make series in the United States and will go up against the likes of Toyota’s GR Cup and GT4 as an entry level tin top category.
The Dark Horse R is a bespoke V8-powered race car built on the S650 Mustang platform with the first car to land in Australia making its first public appearance at Albert Park during the Australian Grand Prix.
Ford, helped by its GT4 distributors Andrew and George Miedecke, has already started its recruitment drive with an invitational event which will be held at Le Mans later this year.
Exact details on where the Mustang Cup will race are yet to be formalised with Ford also still waiting on final approval from Motorsport Australia.
