Daniel Gaunt has become the fourth different race winner of the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship by taking out the opening race in Townsville today.
Having qualified third on the grid, Gaunt made it past fellow Kiwi Jonny Reid on the opening lap before taking the lead from pole-sitter Michael Patrizi on Lap 3.
Having also made his way around Patrizi, Reid began catching Gaunt in the final stages of the race, but was unable to get within striking distance by the chequered flag.
Patrizi, Craig Baird, Ben Barker and Steven Richards rounded out the top six, while Max Twigg was the top non-professional driver home in seventh.
“It’s great to break through for our first Carrera Cup victory today,” said Gaunt.
“I came here this morning thinking a win was possible if everything went right.
” It’s great to get that first win over the line. And if today is anything to go by, we’ll be there or thereabouts tomorrow.
“It’s great to get a sponsor like Money Choice on board and then go and deliver a race result like that.”
Guest driver Mark Noske, driving the Bid4Jase.com car, failed to finish after contacting with the rear of Twigg’s entry damaged his radiator.
Two more Carrera Cup races will be held in Townsville tomorrow.
