An update on Alex Peroni’s condition has credited the halo with saving the young Tasmanian’s life.

Peroni was involved in a terrifying crash during the closing stages of Saturday’s Formula 3 race in Monza, his car clouting a kerb before being thrown skywards.

While airborne, the car barrel rolled before making contact with the tyre barrier while inverted, coming to a rest on its undertray on top of the tyre wall.

The Australian climbed from the wreckage and walked to the medical car before being taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with concussion and a fractured vertebrae.

An update posted on Peroni’s social media this morning revealed further details of his injuries, and that the 19-year-old has been immobilised until further scans on his back have been completed.

“His D6 vertebra has multiple fractures and the medical staff will decide tomorrow if it’s necessary to operate,” the statement read.

“Alex is also recovering from concussion with his helmet extensively damaged.

“Alex’s life was saved by the halo, his helmet and the robust modern survival cell.

“Team Peroni wish to pay tribute to all of those people that have lobbied for constant progress in relation to safety.

“As soon as possible Alex will return to Tasmania to recover.”
