Denny Hamlin will start from the pole position for the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 powered by Kroger at Martinsville Speedway.

The Generation-6 car continues to show its pace as for the 18th time this year the qualifying record was broken. Hamlin posted a speed of 99.595 mph (160.283 km/h), bettering Jimmie Johnson previous record of 98.400 mph set earlier this year.

For Hamlin, it is his third career pole at Martinsville, his fifth of the season and the 17th of his career.

Joining Hamlin on the front row is championship leader Johnson, who has eight career wins at Martinsville.

Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth were third and fourth on the speed chart in qualifying.

Australia’s Marcos Ambrose will start 16th on the flat half-mile track.

“I am a bit disappointed in myself,” said Ambrose.

“I hit the curb on the second lap and our DEWALT Ford Fusion is pretty fast. We still had a good lap and we’ll take it, but I think we could have had more.”
