Australian James Davison has scored a career first pole position in the United SportsCar Championship’s GTD class at Road America.

The 27-year-old, who drives full-time with The Racer’s Group Aston Martin squad, headed the 16-strong GTD field in qualifying.

Davison’s best lap of the famed Wisconsin layout proved 0.2s clear of a late effort from Turner Motorsports BMW driver Dane Cameron.

Former V8 Supercars endurance co-driver Jeroen Bleekemolen was third in the Riley Dodge Viper.

Davison shares the #007 Aston Martin with American Al Carter, currently sitting 15th in GTD points after a tough run that has seen just one top 10 finish in six starts.

Cousin Alex Davison is meanwhile making his debut in the category this weekend, sharing a Muehlner Porsche 911 GTD with former Bathurst 12 Hour co-driver David Calvert Jones.

The pair qualified 14th in GTD, 2.5s from the class pole.

The outright pole position for Sunday’s two hour and 45 minute race fell to Scotsman Ryan Daziel, who shares the #1 Extreme Speed Motorsports HPD with American Scott Sharp.
