Jones takes Super2 practice honours in Townsville

Macauley Jones

Macauley Jones has ended up fastest in practice for Round 4 of the Dunlop Super2 Series in Townsville.

Jones leapt up the timesheets in the final two minutes of the second 40-minute session to oust Paul Dumbrell from top spot by 0.1171s.

The #14 Brad Jones Racing VF Commodore had been 18th prior to that moment, while Dumbrell (#88 Eggleston Motorsport VF Commodore) held an advantage over Garry Jacobson of just 0.0072s.

The former series winners’ respective personal bests still stood up for second- and third-fastest respectively, Jacobson having been fastest in Practice 1 in the #26 MW Motorsport Nissan Altima.

Brodie Kostecki had also jumped 17 positions to sit third before Jones’ hot lap, and therefore settled in fourth position in the #57 Kostecki Brothers Racing VF Commodore.

Chris Pither (#44 Garry Rogers Motorsport VF Commodore) lifted himself three positions with the chequered flag out to finish fifth, one position ahead of last-start winner Dean Fiore (#23 MW Motorsport Nissan Altima).

Will Brown (#38 Eggleston Motorsport VF Commodore) was fastest initially due to taking new tyres for the start of the session, having marked a tyre too badly in Practice 1, and ended up seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 were Alex Rullo (#62 MW Motorsport Nissan Altima), Kurt Kostecki (#55 Kostecki Brothers Racing VF Commodore), and Shae Davies (#67 Paul Morris Motorsport FGX Falcon).

Bryce Fullwood was 15th in the #16 Matt Stone Racing VF Commodore which won both races and the round in North Queensland 12 months ago.

The Darwin native was the last driver on the timesheets to better Jacobson’s earlier benchmark, while all drivers were faster than their respective Practice 1 fastest laps.

Armor All Qualifying for the first of two races this weekend starts tomorrow at 1125 local time/AEST.
