Ex-F1 driver Karun Chandhok has offered some candid insight after a recent test of a Tesla Model S that will be used for the inaugural Electric GT Championship next year.

As preparations continue for the seven-round championship, Chandhok tested the Tesla at Spain’s Circuit Calafat in Catalonia.

“As a racing driver, you’re always curious to test new and different machines and driving a race-prepared Tesla was clearly something I was keen to try,” Chandhok said.

“The car handles remarkably well and is very balanced despite being in the early stages of development.

“I’d be interested to see what it’s like when they get the P100-based version 2.0 up and running next year, as that should have a lot more power.”

Styled similar to the already established FIA Formula E Championship, the EGT will see 20 drivers run for 10 teams in one-make Tesla Model S machinery which will run on bespoke Pirelli tyres.

Competition schedules will see a 20-minute practice session, 60-minute qualifying, a day race (60km) and a dusk race (60km).

Announced earlier this year, the EGT is booked to run at European circuits including Paul Ricard, Barcelona, Assen, Estoril and the Nurburgring while three yet-to-be-detailed non-championship races will be in the Americas.
