Roger Lago has secured his second consecutive GT3 Cup Challenge series victory by finishing fourth in the final race of the season at Phillip Island.

Lago’s title rival Jeff Bobik dominated the third race of the weekend, fending off an early challenge from Race 1 winner Ivan Klasan before pulling away to record a comfortable victory.

The race’s main entertainment was provided by Matt Kingsley, who made his way through from seventh on the grid to run third by Lap 3.

The Queenslander then enjoyed a lengthy scrap for second with Klasan, which appeared to be decided in Kingsley’s favour when the older 996 model Porsche slipped by at Honda Corner on the penultimate lap.

Klasan would regain the position on the eighth and final lap however when Kingsley’s car slowed exiting Siberia.

Phil Morriss swept through to take third from Lago, Jon Trende, Steve Kepper, John Modystach, Terry Knight, John Goodacre and Jan Jinadasa, with Kingsley limping across the line in 20th and last place.

Lago, who will move to the Vodka O Australian GT Championship next year to race his recently imported Lamborghini Gallardo LP600, was predictably pleased to add the 2011 GT3 Cup Challenge title to his Jim Richards Endurance Trophy.

“It was a long season, but we started off well at Wakefield Park and managed to keep it going,” said Lago.

“Congratulations to Jeff for the weekend, he put in some mega drives this weekend and we couldn’t catch him

“Good luck to him and all the other boys in the Cup Challenge next season.”
