Jorge Lorenzo has dominated the Catalunya Grand Prix, maintaining his stranglehold on the 2010 MotoGP Championship.
At his home track, the Fiat Yamaha rider held off an early challenge from Andrea Dovizioso and Casey Stoner to roar away to a convincing win. His lead in the championship now stretches to over two whole race victories from his closest rival Dani Pedrosa. It was Lorenzo’s 10th MotoGP victory.
“It’s very special,” he said.
“It has been a difficult race. Andrea was behind me for a number of laps and I thought he was pushing hard, but fortunately for me, he crashed and I won the race.”
Other than Lorenzo, Honda’s Pedrosa was the only man to actually lead the race – if only for a few hundred metres. Pedrosa made a mega start and led the field at turn one, but outbraked himself at the first corner and rejoined outside the top 10. He set about an amazing fight back, eventually taking second place.
Stoner finished third, shadowing Pedrosa for the final few tours. It is the lead Ducati rider’s second podium finish in a row.
Repsol Honda’s Dovizioso offered the biggest challenge to Lorenzo, climbing all over the back of the Yamaha rider until he slipped off his bike. He got back on to finish a lowly 14th.
Frenchman Randy de Puniet took fourth place and he and the LCR Honda team celebrated like he took the win!
Alvaro Bautista took fifth place ahead of Ben Spies, Loris Capirossi, Nicky Hayden, Marco Melandri and Hector Barbera.
The next round of the MotoGP championship is at the Sachsenring in Germany.
