Lowndes sets the pace in final QR practice

TeamVodafone’s Craig Lowndes has upstaged the V8 Supercars field at Queensland Raceway, setting the fastest time in the final practice session.

Lowndes set a best time of 1m09.6586, ousting fellow Queensland-based driver Tim Slade (Lucky 7 Racing) from the top spot.

Stratco Racing’s David Reynolds was third fastest time, ahead of Paul Dumbrell (The Bottle-O Racing), Shane van Gisbergen (SP Tolls Racing), Todd Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing), Russell Ingall (Supercheap Auto Racing), Garth Tander (Toll Holden Racing Team), Jason Bright (Team BOC) and Fabian Coulthard (Bundaberg Racing).

Championship leader Jamie Whincup was just 26th fastest in the fourth and final practice session of the day. The TeamVodafone driver had been under Lowndes’ best effort late in the session, but aborted the lap due to a report of rain at the final corner.

The red flags had emerged with 10 minutes remaining in the session, with Tony D’Alberto’s Wilson Security Racing Falcon needing to be recovered after stopping on-track with a broken driveshaft.

The V8 Supercars will return to the track for qualifying tomorrow at midday, with the first of two races kicking off at 3:15pm local time.
