Luff edges Baird for Carrera Cup race 2 win

Warren Luff produced a measured drive to edge reigning champion Craig Baird to victory in the second Porsche Carrera Cup race at Mount Panorama.

The experienced sportscar ace made the most of a slick start to pick off poleman and race one winner Nick Percat for the lead on the opening lap.

Once ahead he soon built a lead but a slight mistake on the final lap made for an exciting finish.

However, Luff just held off Baird at the flag with Percat coming home in third.

Percat, who produced an impressive lights-to-flag win in the first race made a strong start from pole but he faced stiff competition from Luff.

The pair went side-by-side through Hell corner and all the way along Mountain straight before Percat yielded the position at The Cutting.

They soon began to pull away from Baird in third.

Behind, an almighty battle for fourth was brewing involving Michael Patrizi, Steven Richards and Shae Davies.

The order at the front changed on lap five when Percat made a mistake at The Chase while trying to apply pressure on Luff.

The former Australian Formula Ford champion missed his braking marker and ran wide rejoining just ahead of Baird.

Struggling to regain his momentum, Baird slipped into second with a move on Percat at Murrays.

Baird pushed hard in the final laps and his effort almost paid off as Luff almost grazed the wall at The Esses.

Luckily for the race leader he managed to recover and fend off Baird to take the chequered flag by three tenths of a second.

The victory for Luff will further cut the deficit to championship leader Baird in the title race.
