Mobil 1 HSV Racing Supercars co-driver Warren Luff will partner Fraser Ross in the opening round of the Australian GT Endurance Championship at Phillip Island next week.
Luff has been enlisted to fill the Professional driver role alongside Ross in the McElrea Racing prepared McLaren 650S for the three hour endurance race at the May 26-28 meeting.
The Queensland-based driver will be bring a wealth of experience to the entry having piloted similar McLaren machinery at the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and the Australian GT Championship.
Luff has been mentoring Ross, who competed in Carrera Cup Australia last season.
“I’m really excited, the McLaren is well suited to the confides of the Phillip Island circuit,” Luff told Speedcafe.com.
“Fraser has had a great start to the year and I know the two of of us will be competitive.
“With Fraser coming on board at McElrea Racing this year, part of my role is to act as a coach and mentor to all of our customers.
“I was able to work with Fraser in Perth a couple of weeks ago where he got a fantastic second place so I will continue that role.
“The GT cars are so much fun to drive and any time you can race at Phillip Island is exciting. It will be a competitive field for sure.”
Ross, who graduated to Australian GT this year, has been making steady progress in the category, highlighted by a second place finish in the last sprint series round at Perth earlier this month.
The Melbourne driver expects the aero dependent McLaren to be better suited to the fast and flowing Phillip Island circuit.
“He (Warren) has a lot of experience in this type of car with outings at the Bathurst 12 Hour,” Ross told Speedcafe.com.
“We work well together so I’m looking forward to combining the driving duties.
“I’m much more comfortable in the car now and looking forward to Phillip Island with the track likely to suit us more than Perth did.”
Prior to next week’s Australian Endurance Championship opener, Luff will log laps in the #2 Scott Pye Mobil 1 HSV Racing Holden Commodore in Friday’s additional driver session at the Winton Super Sprint.
