Mark Webber has lost the single point he scored in the Singapore Grand Prix after being handed a post-race time penalty.
The race stewards deemed that Webber “left the track and gained an advantage” by running onto a narrow stretch of tarmac run-off in a late-race pass on the Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi.
The 20 second penalty bumped Webber to 11th in the race result, dropping the Australian to 62 points behind championship leader Fernando Alonso.
Webber had been fighting over the final points after his three-stop strategy was effectively destroyed by the appearance of two Safety Cars.
Having elected against stopping under the first yellow, Webber dropped from fifth to 15th by taking a fourth set of tyres under the second Safety Car, forcing him to fight hard over the remaining 20 minutes of the ultimately timed race.
“I wasn't too bad pace wise,” he said afterward of his race.
“The strategy was going alright, but the second Safety Car really hurt us and put us to the back of the queue. Around here, fighting and looking after your tyres is a bit of a mess. It's a shame.”
The stewards also handed Michael Schumacher a penalty after the race, with the German awarded a 10-place grid penalty for the next event at Suzuka after clattering into the back of Jean-Eric Vergne last night, putting both cars out of the race.
Schumacher was at a loss to explain the incident, although suggested that his car may have suffered brake problems.
“I am not totally sure why it happened like this; I was braking but the deceleration was not as strong as it usually would be, and I could not avoid running into the car in front of me,” he said.
