Nathan Morcom is hopeful his Phillip Island 101 victory will ensure he completes the remainder of the Australian Endurance Championship.
The 24-year-old competes in the Australian GT Championship’s sprint races with Tekno Autosports, but only received a late call-up from the team to join its AEC line-up for the Victorian event.
After claiming a victory in the opening Australian GT sprint race on Saturday, Morcom successfully combined with Grant Denyer to pull off an impressive victory in the 101 lap contest.
Now leading both the sprint and endurance championships, the Sydneysider is eager to contest the remaining three rounds of the AEC.
Morcom has enjoyed a successful year thus far having already won the Bathurst 6 Hour when he combined with V8 Supercars ace Chaz Mostert.
“It was unreal to get that first win in the endurance championship and to lead that and the sprint championship is awesome,” Morcom told Speedcafe.com.
“I actually wasn’t going to do this race but the owner of the car had a spare spot and they put me in the car and it was unreal.
“I drove down from Sydney to this event because I was uncertain if I was doing it or not but it has been so cool. Hopefully we can keep doing the rest of it.
“I definitely want to be able to do the reminder of the championship for sure.
“The car owner wants to keep doing it but the rest of the season is still to be determined.”
Morcom and Denyer’s victory was made all the more impressive having fought through arguably the most credentialed Australian GT field ever assembled.
V8 Supercars stars Garth Tander, Shane van Gisbergen and Nick Percat were joined at Phillip Island by three international factory drivers in Bruno Spengler, Miguel Molina and Marco Bonanomi.
“These drivers are top world class factory guys from overseas,” added Morcom.
“This is their full-time job. This is not my job. I work for a construction company six days a week so this is a bit of fun at the weekend. It is unreal to show them what we can do.
“For Tekno this is their first year in the category and they are over the moon.”
The Australian GT Championship heads to Townsville on July 10-12, while the Australian Endurance Championship continues at Sydney Motorsport Park on August 26-28.
