Chaz Mostert has set the pace by almost 0.7s in Practice 1 for Round 2 of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series at Phillip island.

Mostert set the only ‘36’ of the 25-minute session to finish up top of the pile in his Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia RS 3, from HMO Customer Racing’s Nathan Morcom and Wall Racing’s Tony D’Alberto.

Lee Holdsworth ended up fourth and series leader Jordan Cox, in another Alfa Romeo, ninth.

Aaron Cameron had set the early pace in his Peugeot, initially with a 1:41.6338s and then a 1:38.2351s on his second flyer.

Cox was first into the 37s when he drove his Garry Rogers Motorsport Giulietta to a 1:37.9409s, before team-mate Cameron to hit back a lap later with a 1:37.8829s.

As the opening hit-out of the weekend ticked through the halfway mark, the Supercars stars began to make an impact, D’Alberto clocking a 1:37.8120s in his Honda then Mostert a 1:37.6077s in his Audi.

D’Alberto and Holdsworth subsequently had a brief fight for second spot before Morcom (Hyundai) took over the ascendancy with a 1:37.5899s in the 15th minute.

Something of a lull followed until Mostert jumped almost seven tenths clear of the field in setting a 1:36.9001s with just under two minutes remaining.

That was the last of the serious movements on the timing screen, meaning early bragging rights for Audi but a top five comprised of as many different makes of car.

Behind Morcom on the 1:37.5899s and D’Alberto on a 1:37.6694s was Holdsworth with a 1:37.7137s.

Fifth went to James Moffat, who set a personal best 1:37.8170s in a spare Renault Megane which has had the latest running gear installed after he was the victim of a sizeable crash at the end of the opening points-paying round of the year.

Rounding out the top 10 were John Martin (Honda), Cameron, Luke King (Audi), Cox, and Ben Bargwanna (Peugeot).

Michael Caruso ended up 16th of the 20 starters in a GRM Alfa Romeo.

Practice 2 starts at 14:00 local time/AEDT.
