A Richard Childress Racing crew member has been suspended from NASCAR events indefinitely for throwing a hammer in a trackside confrontation at Martinsville last weekend.
The incident occurred after an on-track clash between Ty Dillon and Kevin Harvick during the Camping World Truck Series race at the venue.
Harvick’s truck was besieged by Dillon’s RCR personnel after heading to pitroad following the incident.
As well as the suspension to the crew member Adam Brown, Dillon’s crewchief, Paul Richmond, has been fined $10,000 for failing to control his squad.
Harvick had been driving a NTS Motorsports Chevrolet in the event, although usually drives for RCR in the Sprint Cup.
The former Daytona 500 winner will end a 13-year tenure with RCR at the end of the current season to join Strewart-Haas Racing and is expected to be replaced by Ty’s brother Austin Dillon.
He added further spice to the Martinsville incident post-race by referring to the Dillon brothers, who are the grandsons of team owner Richard Childress, as “rich kids”.
“That’s exactly the reason I’m leaving RCR because you’ve got those punk-ass kids coming up,” he said.
“They’ve got no respect for what they do in this sport and they’ve had everything fed to them with a spoon.
“I cut him slack all day and he just dive-bombs me in there and dumps me.
“It’s a shame you’ve got to get taken out by some rich kid like that.”
Austin Dillon currently leads the Nationwide Series standings with three races remaining, while Ty is third in the Truck series.
