
The Northern Territory’s Country Liberal and Labor parties have outlined big plans for motorsport funding ahead of the election at the end of the month.
Both sides of politics have taken to Hidden Valley Raceway over the last week to pledge their allegiance to motorsport in the lead-up to the August 27 vote.
Adam Giles’ incumbent Country Liberal party has allocated a total of $42.55 million to motorsport across the next term.
As announced in June, its proprieties include funding lighting that will enable Hidden Valley to host Supercars Championship night racing from 2018.
The Supercars are locked in to continue at the Darwin venue until 2030 under a deal signed at the recent running of this year’s event.
Funding a Supercars night race is meanwhile not among $20 million worth of plans being spruiked by Labor leader Michael Gunner.
A total of $6 million from the opposition’s funding will go towards replacing Motorsports NT’s administration facilities at Hidden Valley.
The funding promises published by the respected parties are listed below.
Country Liberals
· $8 million over four years to Motorsports NT for ongoing motorsports event and infrastructure funding
· Replace Motorsports House at Hidden Valley with a contemporary structure that includes a viewing balcony, corporate meeting area, administration facilities and upgraded office systems
· Install lighting at Hidden Valley Complex for night racing and other public events
· Upgrade the computer race timing system for the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association
· Top End Motor Cross Club (Palmerston) to complete track lighting to Motor Cycling Australia standards
· Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association to replace existing track lighting with LED and provide an extended cover braking area
· Darwin Karting Association to cover open drains within the track confines, replace the sewerage system, and improve the lighting system to meet new Karting Australia standards
· North Australian Motor Sports to upgrade computer and timing systems
· Top End Mud Racing Association for electrical and track lighting upgrades
· DSDRA (Northline Speedway) to fence off the stairs near the pit office and for pit lighting, and a new canteen for the back straight.
· Mobile canteen for Darwin Motor Cycle Club
· Territory Quads Association to provide fencing, a water supply and toilets; and a tractor, slasher and rotary hoe to be share with Top End Mud Racing Association
· Top End Road Racing Association for air fence deploying and a trailer
· Katherine Motor Sports Complex to install ring main and separate mains and toilet facilities
· Katherine Motor Sports Complex to fence the complex and provide a new entry
· Katherine Off Road Motorcycle Sport Club to improve safety standards to meet the minimum national requirements for MotoX racing events and to upgrade existing club facilities to benefit members, competitors and visitors.
Labor
· $6M to replace the 50-year-old MotorSports NT administration facilities at Hidden Valley
· $1.3M for the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association, for the upgrade of lighting to LED and added cover breaking area
· $1M to the @Top End Motor Cross Club for track lighting within Motor Cycling Australia lighting requirements and reduced expenditure of hire lighting and generators
· $500,000 to the Finke Desert Race Masterplan, including improvements to the finishing straight, rainwater tanks, a multipurpose shed and improved lighting facilities
· $1M to install ring main and separate mains along with toilet facilities at Katherine Motor Sports Complex.
• $1.6M to install a permanent clubhouse, race control tower and canteen facilities to replace existing containers at the Central Australian Drag Racing Association
· $1.65M to upgrade of safety walls, fencing, lighting at the Tennant Creek Speedway Club to enable compliance with National Speedway Association safety requirements
· $2M annually over 4 years to Motorsport NT
· An appropriate parcel of Crown Land to be leased to the Alice Springs Rally Club.
