Steve Owen will make a one-off return to the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Sydney Olympic Park next month.
The reigning FV8 Champ will drive for TAG Motorsport in the Commodore VZ that Tony Bates has driven in selected rounds this year.
It will mean that TAG has two cars competing, with Geoff Emery driving the team’s second Commodore at the Sydney meeting.
Owen told Speedcafe that he plans on contending for the round win at the new street track.
“The car should be capable of winning,” he said.
“If everything goes to plan, you’d expect us to go out there and be contenders. That’s certainly our intention.
“And it’s a good opportunity for the TAG team. No one has been to that track before and they are looking to put someone in that car next year, so if we can get a result, it could work out well for everyone.
“I don’t know much about the track. I have a rough idea of its layout. I guess it’s the same for everyone, though, so we’ll just have to see how we go.”
Owen has sat on the sidelines for the majority of 2009 after winning last year’s Fujitsu crown. His driving duties this year have been limited to the V8 endurance races where he drove with Shane Price in the Autobarn Commodore VE at Phillip Island and Bathurst this year, finishing 12th and 16th in the two races.
Before Owen steps into the TAG Commodore in Sydney, Owen will drive a Lamborghini Gallardo with Ted Huglin at next week’s Island Magic meeting at Phillip Island, Victoria.
