Percat flies as conditions improve at Winton

Nick Percat

A last gasp effort from Nick Percat on a drying track put the Brad Jones Racing on top in Practice 2 at the Winton Super Sprint.

Rain abated prior to the start of the 45 minute session but prolonged showers earlier in the day presented a wet track to the Supercars field.

As the time progressed, a dry line appeared before teams elected to fit slick tyres for the final minutes.

Percat was among those to equip dry tyres which resulted in a 1:28.10s effort as he then ran out of fuel.

The South Australian proved to be more than a second faster than nearest rival Scott McLaughlin in the #17 DJR Team Penske Ford Falcon.

McLaughlin had topped the times prior to the crossover point onto the slick rubber.

Erebus Motorsport’s David Reynolds was another to make the slick tyre work, moving to third late on ahead of Fabian Coulthard (DJRTP) and Prodrive’s Cameron Waters.

Mobil 1 HSV Racing’s James Courtney was the best of the wet tyre runners in sixth, with the 2010 champion having undergone a chassis change prior to the weekend.

Nissan Motorsport’s Michael Caruso showed strong pace in the wet topping the times for a period of the session, before sliding down to seventh.

The two 10 was rounded out by Jamie Whincup (Triple Eight), Tim Slade (Brad Jones Racing) and Preston Hire Racing’s Lee Holdsworth.

The session ran green for 15 minutes before Macauley Jones brought out the red flags when he lost control of his Brad Jones Racing wildcard entry on the entry to P7, spinning into the gravel, trap.

Fellow wildcard runner Shae Davies, who topped the additional co-driver practice earlier today, brought out the red flags for a second time nine minutes later.

The Dunlop Super2 regular ran wide at Turn 3 where he became beached in the gravel.

Action was short-lived after its resumption when Brad Jones Racing’s Tim Blanchard rotated at Turn 3 prompting a third stoppage.

Once recovered, Jones, Davies and Blanchard returned to the session before finishing 26th, 24th and 23rd respectively.

There was a controversial incident towards the end of the session when James Moffat (P20) and Shane van Gisbergen (P14) made contact at Turn 7.

“He gave me a little one-finger salute after that so I don’t think he was too happy with me about it,” said Moffat.

“But if I meant to do it I would have done it proper. I would have turned him around properly. It’s just one of those things.”

Taz Douglas is set to undergo a post session stewards investigation for shortcutting the circuit.

The Winton Super Sprint continues on Saturday with a 45 minute practice at 1050 ahead of qualifying session (1325) and a 40-lap race scheduled to start at 1600 local time.
