Chris Pither ended Cameron Waters’ domination of the Castrol Edge Townville 400 by securing his second Dunlop Series pole position of the season.
The Ice Break Falcon driver saved his best until the dying seconds of qualifying to pip series leader Waters to pole with an impressive 1:14.6153s effort.
Waters had held the top spot in the closing stages of a hotly contested session, but was unable to match Pither as he finished 0.1416s adrift.
Reigning Dunlop Series champion Paul Dumbrell showed signs he is getting on top of his Eggleston Motorsport Commodore in third.
Jack Le Brocq shot to fourth in the final moments as he edged the Super Black Racing entry of Simon Evans.
Todd Hazelwood produced another strong performance in the iSeek Racing Falcon to secure sixth, with the South Australian due to start Race 2 alongside Macauley Jones.

Aaren Russell, Ant Pedersen and James Golding rounded out the top 10.
It proved to be a struggle for Race 1 second place finisher Garry Jacobson with the Eggleston Motorsport runner due to start from 12th behind Shae Davies.
The first segment of qualifying was red flagged twice due to separate incidents involving Dan Day and Brett Hobson.
The final Dunlop Series Race 2 will start at 14:55.
