A post-event points penalty for a Race 16 collision with Scott McLaughlin has further added to a shocking weekend for Ford’s leading V8 Supercars title hope Will Davison.
The Pepsi Max FPR Falcon driver proved surprisingly uncompetitive on Sunday, qualifying outside the top 10 for both races before managing just a 12th place finish in the first of the afternoon’s encounters.
His assault on the final 100km race then ended prematurely when an attempted passing move for 12th on Craig Lowndes saw Davison careen into McLaughlin, who had been turning into the Turn 12 left-hander up ahead.
Davison later admitted to reckless driving and was docked 25 points – widening the margin to championship leader Jamie Whincup to 213.
“It was a really tough day and after qualifying poorly we tried some things with the car but just got caught up in the mid-pack madness,” reflected Davison, who lost second in the standings to Lowndes after Race 15.
“I was probably a bit conservative in the first race and got shuffled back so it felt great early and I was easily able to attempt passes on Craig (Lowndes).
“I got a run on him and as I was passing him into Turn 12 it got quite close between us and I locked the rear wheels and unfortunately hit the car in front of him.
“The car felt good and I had to get through the pack but I slightly miscalculated the move.”
As previously reported, Whincup, Lowndes and Fabian Coulthard were also handed points penalties on Sunday evening for a Safety Car restart rule breach in Race 15.
The Race 15 action also saw Tony D’Alberto relieved of 15 points for an incident with Alexandre Premat.
Twenty-five point penalties were levied to Todd Kelly for also making contact with Premat and to Maro Engel for contact with Tim Blanchard.
