Will Power holds the trump card heading into the penultimate Verizon IndyCar Series round at the Sonoma road course this weekend.
With three victories and three pole positions at the 3.84km circuit over the past four seasons.
The Toowoomba driver holds a 39-point advantage over his Team Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves.
Even though the statistics heavily favour the Australian, hard lessons learnt from being in the same position in 2010 and 2012 before finishing second remain at the front of his mind.
“Certainly we are in a good position going into the last two weeks of the season,” Power was quoted in a series preview.
“We have a lot of confidence in our ability as a team at Sonoma and Auto Club Speedway, but there is still over 150 points on the table with Fontana being a double-points race.”
“Sonoma is just a very technical racetrack. It’s a place where you have to really hit your marks and be precise.
“For whatever reason that fits my driving style perfectly.
“After the test at Sonoma a couple of weeks ago, it seems like we’ll have another fast one this weekend.”
Power has been the most successful road/street course performer this season, amassing 362 points in 11 races but has importantly lifted his game in the five oval races by racking up 240 points with debut Penske driver Juan Pablo Montoya leading those statistics on 275 points.
Mathematically drivers still in with a shot alongside Power and Castroneves are Simon Pagenaud (-92 from Power), Ryan Hunter-Reay (-108), Montoya (-114) and the reigning champion Scott Dixon (-130).
