In this week’s Pirtek Poll, we asked you if Supercars needs a new specification of slick tyre in order to improve the racing.
Tyres was the topic of the most recent Roland’s View column on Speedcafe, with Roland Dane arguing that while the new Gen3 cars have improved the racing – or at least have the potential to do so – something is still holding them back.
While a softer compound wet tyre was introduced for the 2023 season, the slick tyres have not changed for the new Gen3 Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustangs, carrying over from the previous era of Supercars.
One of the issues that Gen3 was intended to address was the ability of Supercars to follow each other without losing performance – what’s termed as ‘aero wash’ – that reduced overtaking opportunities.
Yet Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters told Speedcafe that tyre overhearing was also an issue for the previous Supercars when following each other closely, again making passing more difficult.
Could a new slick tyre correct this? Our Pirtek Poll results suggest that you largely agree.
