David Reynolds has ended the third and final V8 Supercars practice session of the day at Sandown with the fastest time after another 40 minute hit-out interrupted by rain.
The Botte-O Ford driver edged Jamie Whincup from the top spot by 0.012s after setting a 1:10.58s lap inside the final minute.
Reynolds’ Ford Performance Racing stable-mate Will Davison clocked an even later effort to finish third fastest ahead of Craig Lowndes, Tim Slade, Mark Winterbottom, Lee Holdsworth, Garth Tander, Greg Murphy and James Courtney.
Rain at the 15 minute mark made for a mixed session, with a large portion of the field electing to log laps on wet tyres before the circuit was dry enough for a return to slicks.
Whincup had set the pace before the rain, and was the first to eclipse his own time when switching back to the slick tyres for the final 10 minutes.
The red flags had earlier been called just four minutes into the session when Steve Owen went off and became stranded on the wet grass at the Turn 2/3 complex. The VIP Petfoods Ford soon returned to the circuit to end the session 19th fastest.
Early drama also befell the Trading Post Falcon, which sustained minor damage in a collision between John McIntyre and Alexandre Premat.
The Fabian Coulthard/David Besnard Holden was absent from the final session after its crash in Practice 2. The car is expected to return to the circuit for final practice tomorrow morning.
Practice 4 will be followed by a 20 minute qualifying session and a pair of qualifying races in the afternoon.
