Daniel Ricciardo was left frustrated after qualifying just sixth fastest for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Australian had set the pace on Friday, but was struck with an electrical problem in final practice which curtailed his running early in the session.
Though the problem was rectified for qualifying, the lost time meant the Red Bull driver was compromised heading into the 60-minute session.
“We lost out a bit this morning and it was just hard to come back from that,” Ricciardo said after qualifying.
“We started off this afternoon Q1 with quite a different car to what we had yesterday, and it didn’t really work.
“That’s just how it is. It’s motor sport, it’s frustrating.”
Ricciardo will line up alongside teammate Max Verstappen on the third row, though remains hopeful that he’ll be able to make progress in the race despite starting behind the both Ferraris and Mercedes.
“I definitely believe I can move forward,” he asserted.
“We’re sixth where yesterday it looked like we could be front row or at least top two rows, so we’re at the back of that lead bunch.
“That’s frustrating but we can move forward tomorrow.”
“Today I think Ferrari really made a step forward which is of course hard to explain,” admitted Verstappen.
“In Q3 it’s always a bit harder for us,” the Dutchman added. “We cannot turn up our engines like Mercedes do, but we are there -we are more or less there.”
“They were very quick,” Ricciardo agreed.
“Especially this morning, when they put in that time, when Seb put in that time…
“We knew our car wasn’t great, I had a couple laps on it but yeah, we certainly struggled a little bit.
“It would have been nice to have had the pace we had yesterday but it wasn’t the case.”
