Rossi victorious after late Marquez clash

Valentino Rossi on his way to victory in Argentina

Valentino Rossi on his way to victory in Argentina

Valentino Rossi emerged from a penultimate lap clash with Marc Marquez to take victory in the Grand Prix of Argentina.

Reigning world champion Marquez had led the majority of the race but a resurgent Rossi, who started from eighth on the grid, managed to reel in the Honda as the Spaniard began to suffer with tyre wear.

The pair played out an enthralling dice for the lead in the closing laps with both enjoying spells in front, before the two bikes made contact twice.

The final collision saw Marquez clip the back of Rossi’s Yamaha and fall from his bike at high speed, allowing Rossi to take the chequered flag with ease.

Marquez was unable to jump aboard his stricken Honda.

Race Direction at the Termas Rio Hondo circuit deemed the incident did not require any sanctions to be awarded following an investigation after the race.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso claimed second position having surged into the position in then early stages.

Meanwhile, LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow snatched the final place on the podium with a last gasp move on the Ducati of Andrea Iannone at the final corner.

Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo endured a largely uneventful race to finish fifth ahead of the Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith.

Despite starting from second on the grid, Aleix Espargaro could only manage seventh having been hampered by his Suzuki’s lack of top end speed.

Australia’s Jack Miller produced an impressive ride to claim four more world championship points with a 12th placed finish for LCR Honda.
