Liam Sager and Jack Le Brocq have shared race victories at the Armor All Gold Coast 600 during Round 7 of The Australian Formula Ford Championship.
Both races produced plenty of drama with Nick Foster and championship leader Cameron Waters crashing out in separate incidents. Foster failed to finish both races and lost second in the championship to Le Brocq, while a mistake from Waters, who had the opportunity to wrap up the title in Race 2, collected the concrete wall heavily, ensuring the championship battle continues.
“I’m really disappointed, I have great speed this weekend and I obviously wanted to wrap up the title today, but I made a small mistake and that’s all it takes around here,” Waters said.
“I feel bad for the guys, they have a couple of bent cars to fix tonight, but they will be ready to go for the final race tomorrow. It would have been a good race at the front, but I’m not going to dwell on it.”
Sager’s victory in Race 1 was the first of his career and he backed in up with second in Race 2, pressuring winner Le Brocq all the way to the line.
“The car is just really good this weekend, we were fast at Clipsal, so it’s clearly suited to street circuits. I’m having a great time racing at the front with the quick guys and it’s giving me a lot of confidence,” Sager said.
“I had some great battles with Cameron [Waters] in the first race and Jack [Le Brocq] in the second race and I feel like I can mix it with them this weekend. I can’t wait for tomorrow, hopefully I can have another good race and get on the podium.”
Le Brocq continued his recent good form by taking victory in Race 2 after a third place finish in the first race. The results move him ahead of Foster in the championship.
“It’s great to move into second in the championship this early in the weekend, that was always the aim coming here and I felt like I could do it,” Le Brocq said.
“The races aren’t that long here, but it’s really physical in the car and incredibly hot, so keeping the car off the walls and maintaining concentration can be a challenge at times. I feel like I’m driving really well and I’ve got a lot of confidence after spending some time in the UK recently and that’s starting to show.”
Sonic Motor Racing Services driver Gary Jacobson was involved in an incident in Race 1, which injured his arm. While not serious, the Victorian elected to go to hospital for precautionary x-rays.
Round 7 of the championship continues with Race 3 at 10:10am tomorrow.
