Shane van Gisbergen has handed Tekno Autosports its maiden V8 Supercars Championship race victory in front of a record crowd at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
The Kiwi won a race-long battle with the Red Bull Racing Australia Holden of Jamie Whincup, eventually adding the victory and the fastest lap to the pole position he won earlier in the day.
The victory is the first for a team other than Red Bull (formerly Vodafone) or Ford Performance Racing since November, 2011.
An early first stop allowed Whincup to jump Van Gisbergen and lead the middle stages of the race, but the four-time champion could do nothing to prevent his rival retaking the advantage at the second and final stops.
Van Gisbergen then survived a Safety Car restart with 11 laps to go to hold on for a 2.2s victory.
Whincup took second despite some late squabbling with team-mate Craig Lowndes and Russell Ingall, who eventually secured third and fourth respectively.
Mark Winterbottom, Will Davison, James Courtney, Tony D’Alberto, Scott McLaughlin and Jonathon Webb rounded out the top 10.
The two Ford Performance Racing drivers had been challenging for the podium before both losing time with wheel nut problems in their second stops.
The race had been largely devoid of action until a crash from Alex Davison at Turn 8 brought out the late Safety Car.
There was carnage behind the front-runners after the restart, with Jason Bright – who had taken on a third set of tyres under yellow in order to charge through the pack – taking out Rick Kelly at the Turn 14 hairpin. The cars of Garth Tander and Todd Kelly sustained heavy damage in the resulting melee.
That incident will be investigated after the race, as will a late bump from Courtney on McLaughlin that dropped the Fujitsu Holden from seventh to ninth in the waning laps.
Just 17 cars saw the chequered flag, with front-runners Alexandre Premat (power steering failure) and Fabian Coulthard (who slid into the Turn 8 wall on fluid dropped by Premat) both dropping out in the early stages.
David Reynolds also appeared to be a victim of Premat’s fluid as he knocked the left-rear of his FPR Falcon at Turn 8 shortly afterward.
Throttle problems accounted for the Mercedes entries of Maro Engel and Tim Slade, while a cool suit failure and eventual gearbox issue made it a day to forget for Nissan’s Michael Caruso.
Craig Lowndes now leads the championship standings by 12 points over team-mate Whincup heading into the second event at Symmons Plains on April 5-7.
