Mark Skaife is set to be inducted into the New South Wales Hall of Champions for the state’s sports stars next month.
Skaife was born and raised on the Central Coast, between Sydney and Newcastle, and went on to achieve legendary status in Australian touring car racing.
He won the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 six times, placing him equal fourth all-time, and amassed the equal second highest number of ATCC/Virgin Australia Supercars Championships at five.
Outside of touring cars, he won the Australian Drivers’ three times, including in the year of his first ATCC title in 1992.
In retirement, Skaife has become a television commentator and served two years on the Supercars Commission, which is responsible for advising the board on sporting aspects of the championship.
He was inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame in 2017.
The 51-year-old will be one of five inductees into the Sport NSW Hall of Champions in a ceremony in Sydney on November 27.
The Hall was inaugurated in 1979 and counts 372 sportspeople as members, including three-time world drivers’ champion Sir Jack Brabham as one of the 21 ‘Legends’.
Other inductees include legendary cricketer Sir Donald Bradman, pioneering rugby union turned rugby league player Dally Messenger, and multiple Olympic Gold medallist Ian Thorpe.
The Hall/museum is based in the Quaycentre at Sydney Olympic Park.
