Stewart holds off Johnson in Martinsville

Tony Stewart has won the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville, fending off a late charge from Jimmie Johnson to secure the win.

Stewart passed Johnson on a restart with three laps to go, and survived the reigning champion’s desperate bids to get back in front.

The win has moved Stewart up to second place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, now just eight points behind leader Carl Edwards. It was Stewart’s third win in this year’s Chase and his 42nd career win.

Immediately after the win, Stewart laid down the challenge to Edwards, who suggested that Edwards should be “worried” about his speed with three events to go.

“He’d better be worried, that’s all I can say,” Stewart said.

Edwards dug deep to score ninth place having dropped off the lead lap twice.

Jeff Gordon finished third, followed by Kevin Harvick, who climbed to third in the standings, 21 points behind Edwards. Denny Hamlin came home fifth ahead of Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Martin Truex Jr, Edwards and Ryan Newman.

Australian Marcos Ambrose finished 29th.

Chase contenders Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski both experienced late trouble and finished 31st and 17th respectively.
