Super2 win a boost for Stanaway’s main game hopes

Richie Stanaway believes there is a genuine chance of securing a main game Supercars drive next year after scoring an impressive victory on debut in the Dunlop Super2 Series.

The New Zealander once again highlighted his potential to Supercars teams by finishing third for the Sydney Motorsport Park round on his maiden solo appearance in a Supercar.

Stanaway, who drove a wildcard Prodrive Ford to victory in Sunday’s Race 4, has made his intentions to graduate to Supercars clear after turning is back on a career in Europe.

The 25-year-old former GP2 and GP3 race winner has been linked to potential drive in the fourth Prodrive Falcon currently driven by Jason Bright.

However, the entry is underpinned by a Racing Entitlements Contract owned by veteran Bright, who also has a contract with the team, and intends to carry on as a full-time driver next year.

Stanaway is understood to have a co-driving contract with Prodrive until next year having been placed alongside Cameron Waters for this year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup after an impressive debut at the squad in 2016.

The team is also working to retain current drivers Waters and Chaz Mostert, who are both out of contract at the end of the year.

However, the Kiwi remains hopeful an opportunity may arise next year having proven his skills again in Dunlop Super2 Series.

“I think so,” Stanaway told Speedcafe.com, when asked if there is a genuine chance of a main game drive next year.

“It (the victory) was what I needed. I really needed to get a win at the weekend.

“It is important for the future because these are all the guys that want main game seats too.

“You never know and I don’t want to get my hopes up.

“We have still got three important races (enduros) to go which will be important for benchmarking my performances.

“If myself and Cam get results then that will help the both of us.

“I’m fully focused on trying to get good results in the enduros and then I will be working pretty hard over the off-season to try and put something together, because I really want to be in one of those main series cars next year.”

Stanaway will return to the Supercars paddock for the opening round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup at the Wilson Security Sandown 500 from September 15-17.
