Supercars has admitted it still has ‘a fair way to go’ before it can finalise plans for a night race at Sydney Motorsport Park next year following the completion of a lighting test.

The championship undertook a special test at the Western Sydney venue on Thursday which saw DJR Team Penske’s Fabian Coulthard and Nissan Motorsport’s Simona de Silvestro conduct high speed laps around a partially lit track.

Floodlights were installed at Turn 2 for 30 minute to allow the drivers to test visibility while television cameras captured footage to ascertain if the lighting is sufficient for broadcasting.

The lights were moved around the circuit corner by corner with the remainder of the three hour test completed by Alex Davison behind the wheel of the series’ Porsche Safety Car.

Supercars will now evaluate the results before deciding how best to proceed with the project.

Championship CEO James Warburton says the project is moving closer to fruition, but admits there is still plenty of work to be completed.

“As we imagined, the cars under lights looked absolutely spectacular,” said Warburton.

“We are very fortunate to have absolute professionals in Supercars Media and our teams, represented by Shell V-Power Racing and Team Harvey Norman, with a special thanks to Fabian, Simona and Alex.

“There was a real buzz with the test, and no doubt we have moved further towards achieving the goal.

“The test did, however, show we have a fair way to go, but we are determined to keep progressing.”

Coulthard and de Silvestro reported that visibility was sufficient following the test, but felt headlights on the cars could be improved alongside tweaks to the circuit’s brake marker boards.

The proposed night race at Sydney Motorsport Park has been linked with a Thursday night slot although dates, time slots and race formats are yet to be confirmed.
