Supercars will offer five bonus points to the driver who sets the fastest lap at sprint events in 2021.
Bonus points will be on offer at eight events throughout 2021, and with three races at each sprint event, it’ll mean 120 additional points are available over the year.
Sprint events will be bumped up from a maximum of 300 points to 315 points.
Super500 events at Mount Panorama, Townsville, and Surfers Paradise, as well as the Bathurst 1000 will not offer bonus points.
The news comes with the publication of Supercars’ Operations Manual.
The new rule reads: “At Sprint Events only, additional Championship points specified as 5% of the amount awarded to the race winner, will be awarded to the Driver who achieves the fastest lap in each race.”
The “five percent” reference means the fastest lap bonus will be adjusted in the event that full race points are not awarded.
This year’s Repco Supercars Championship will mark the first in its history to award bonus points for the fastest lap.
Supercars follows the likes of Formula 1, which awarded one bonus point for the fastest lap as of 2019.
