Suzuki tops second day at Phillip Island
Maverick Vinales set the pace on the second day of the test at Phillip Island
Maverick Vinales set the pace on the second day of the test at Phillip Island

Maverick Vinales put Suzuki on top of the times after the second day of running at the MotoGP pre-season test at Phillip Island.

Intermittent showers continued at the Victorian circuit in the morning before a long period of dry running in the afternoon, which allowed MotoGP teams to rack up crucial mileage.

The improved weather also offered much more  time to adapt to the new-for-2016 Michelin tyres and electronics.

Vinales clocked a session best of 1:29.131s which proved to be just 0.161s quicker than the factory Honda of Marc Marquez.

Marquez and Vinales traded fastest times in the dying moments of the hit-out before the latter posted a late flyer.

Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo returned to the sharp end with the reigning world champion third fastest just 0.266s adrift of the pace.

Lorenzo limited his outings to six lap runs with the Spaniard yet to complete a full race distance simulation.

The sister Yamaha of Valentino Rossi ended the day in fourth.

LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow continued his impressive start to pre-season with the Brit rounding out the top five.

Pramac Ducati’s Hector Barbera was sixth while Andrea Iannone (Ducati), Dani Pedrosa (Honda), Scott Redding (Pramac Ducati) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Yamaha) completed the top 10.

After failing to log a timed lap yesterday due to the inclement weather, Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso completed the most laps of anyone chalking up 88 laps.

The Italian was just a second adrift of Vinales’ pace in 12th position.

Jack Miller’s recovery from a broken right leg showed signs of progress with the Marc VDS Honda rider completing 58 laps with his best time just 1.3s shy of Vinales.

The action continues tomorrow in what will be the final day of the second pre-season test.
