Tony Stewart will start Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 from pole position as he aims to rescue his Chase for the Sprint Cup campaign.
The Stewart-Haas Racing driver won the opening two races of the Chase, but sits seventh in points with six races remaining having struggled to 15th and 23rd place runs in the most recent two races.
Stewart lapped the Charlotte Motor Speedway course in 28.131s to beat Roush Fenway Ford driver Matt Kenseth to the pole by 0.006s.
The Ford Fusions of Carl Edwards, AJ Allmendinger and Greg Biffle round out the top five, while Australian Marcos Ambrose will share the sixth row with David Ragan.
