Two new Formula Ford race winners have taken the spoils in Round 6 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Phillip Island today.

Borland/Spectrum driver Daniel Erickson and CAMS Rising Star/Mygale entrant Trent Harrison both took their first wins of the year.

While Erickson has won Australian Formula Ford races before, it was Harrison’s first national Formula Ford win.

The first of two races saw Erickson come out on top, following a late race Safety Car. The Borland Racing Developments driver avoided numerous incidents to hold off a fast finishing Tom Williamson and Cameron Waters in the run to the flag.

“What a great race,” said Erickson.

“The Bosch Batteries Spectrum was really good today and I was able to make the most of the Safety Car at the end to take the win.

“I made a really good restart and snuck around the outside going through turn three, which really set me up nicely and I was able to hold the advantage to the line.”

Harrison finished in fourth showing good patience in the final laps, while Matt Brabham rounded out the top five. Nick Foster and Jack LeBrocq both looked to be on for a strong result, but separate incidents saw them finish in sixth and 13th respectively.

In Race 2 it was Harrison who made his move early on and bolted away from the rest of the field to secure a comfortable victory ahead of Waters and Williamson.

“As soon as I got into the lead, I just put my head down and made a big effort to get away,” Harrison said.

“I was determined not to look in the mirrors and just focus on building a gap and obviously it worked.

“I’m really confident heading into tomorrow, the car is very good this weekend, but it’s a long race here so we’ll see what we can do, I’m sure it will be exciting.”

LeBrocq recovered to fourth ahead of Foster and Erickson.

Championship leader Waters had an off-track excursion in Race 2, but his consistency extended his series lead.

Round 6 of the series continues with Race 3 at 11:05am tomorrow at Phillip Island.
