Fabian Coulthard will be confirmed tomorrow as a Walkinshaw Racing driver for 2010.
The 27-year-old will drive the Bundaberg Red Racing Commodore VE that David Reynolds has campaigned this season. The deal was signed yesterday.
With Reynolds’s current team-mate Paul Dumbrell tipped to move to Ford Performance Racing’s new third car next year, a slot looks like being open at WR, and Speedcafe understands that Reynolds, Andrew Thompson and Jonathon Webb are all in the frame for the drive.
Coulthard had one year remaining on his driving contract with Paul Cruickshank Racing, but a deal was struck between all parties to see the Coulthard make the switch.
Coulthard first came on the Australian scene in 2002, winning the Formula Ford support races at the Albert Park Grand Prix. He went on to win the 2005 Australian Carrera Cup Championship and made his V8 Supercar debut that year with Tasman Motorsport in the endurance races. He drove a part-time season in 2006 with Paul Morris Motorsport, and completed the majority of the 2007 season with the PMM team before pulling out of the last few rounds.
His move in 2008 to PCR turned out to be the best career decision he’s made so far. A number of top 10 places in 2008 led to even better results (and a podium at Symmons Plains) this year.
His great season put him on the radar of every V8 Supercar team with an available seat, and inking a deal with Walkinshaw Racing – the mecca of Holden’s V8 teams – is justification of Coulthard’s current stance in the sport.
