David Wall says that winning his second-consecutive Australian GT Championship is his career highlight.

At Sandown Raceway on the weekend, the Porsche driver had to secure the title the hard way. He finished fourth in Race 1 which would have given him the crown, but stewards deemed that his car came in under the legal weight. The Wilson Security-backed driver was disqualified and sent to the back of the grid for Race 2.

Wall drove through to fifth place, and when closest rival Dean Grant endured a spin and fell to eighth, the title was Wall’s.

The New South Welshman, who drove with Karl Reindler in the V8 Supercars endurance races in the Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore, said that taking this title was the best thing he has done in a race car.

“To win back-to-back Australian GT Championships is the highlight of my career so far and to do so in the same car we won with last year makes it even more special,” he said.

“I have had amazing support from all my sponsors this year, not just Wilson Security.

“Of course, being a family run team, I would not be here without the support of my parents and my wife Amy. They all work hard to help the team get to where we are today and my huge thanks go out to them.”

Wall said that his decision to run the car himself this year paid off.

“This year we ran the team ourselves to keep costs down and the team has operated perfectly all season,” he said.

“They are a fantastic bunch of guys; from my engineer Steve Williams down, their dedication and support are why we have had so much success.”

Tony Quinn, driving his VIP Petfoods Mosler MT900n GT3, won his second round in a row ahead of James Koundouris.

Going into the round, Peter Hackett was Wall’s largest threat, but a spectacular incident in the opening moments of Race 1 with Max Twigg cost him.
