David Wall claimed pole position for today’s first Porsche Carrera Cup Australia heat at the Sepang International Circuit.
The Wall Racing driver surged to the top of the timing screens after posting a 2:08.448s in the final two minutes of the session at the Malaysian circuit.
Wall, who set the pace in the Friday practice, emerged 0.103s faster than Cameron McConville in the Zagame Motorsport entry.
As the chequered flag flew Alex Davison held second spot but his lap time was rescinded for exceeding track limits at Turn 8, which dropped him to fifth.
He wasn’t the only driver to fall foul at the corner with title contenders Andre Heimgartner and Jaxon Evans both losing their best times. The pair had occupied the top two positions earlier in the session.
Heimgartner ended qualifying in third ahead of Dylan O’Keefe, Davison, Nick McBride and Evans.
Porsche test and development driver Lars Kern was eighth with the top 10 completed by James Abela and Michael Almond.
Dean Cook topped the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge class with a 0.257s margin over Simon Ellingham.
Stephen Grove was third and will start this afternoon’s race alongside Tim Miles.
The session was red flagged briefly when Shane Smollen found the gravel trap. Marc Cini also suffered a spin but was able to continue without issue.
In Carrera Cup Asia, New Zealand’s Chris van der Drift took pole position from Austria’s Philip Hamprecht eight thousandths of a second.
The opening Porsche Carrera Cup Australia race is scheduled for 1900 AEST and will be streamed live on Speedcafe.com.
