Prodrive Supercars racer Cam Waters firmly believes he can contend for wins this season.
After indifferent form in the Supercars Championship last season, Waters has heeded some sage advice from MotoGP superstar Valentino Rossi.
Waters, backed by Monster Energy like Rossi, attended the MotoGP pre-season test at Phillip Island recently where he spent some time with the Italian two-wheel legend.
“This year I believe I’m a contender for race wins,” Waters said.
Similar to spending time with Mercedes F1 star Lewis Hamilton at the Australian Grand Prix last year, Waters feels the encounters will help him extract more performance from himself.
Rossi’s mental strength as much as his raw on-track ability have gone a long way to the Italian winning seven MotoGP Championships.
“Having the mental side down is instrumental in this game – as I learned from Lewis (Hamilton) last year, and Valentino (Rossi),” Waters said.
“Just chatting with the two of them – there’s no doubt in their mind about what they are capable of.
“They execute based off that belief, and the championships speak for themselves.”
“This year is all about putting the hammer down and getting results. Last year we showed the speed, however obviously as a rookie, the consistency lacked.”
Waters will begin the season at the showpiece Clipsal 500 meeting from March 2-5 with a new engineer, Brad Wischusen.
The Prodrive squad completed an engineering reshuffle following the departure of Jason Gray at the end of last season.
Waters’ 2016 engineer Brendan Hogan moves across to the role vacated by Gray on Mark Winterbottom’s Falcon while Adam de Borre returns after a stint with DJR Team Penske to head Chaz Mostert’s campaign in a return to a winning combination.
