World Endurance Championship

Matt Campbell has ended the official Le Mans test day as the fastest GTE-Am runner aboard the Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR he shares with Christian Reid and Julien Andlauer.

The trio banked a best of 3:33.970 around La Sarthe, less than a tenth of a second off the back of the GTE-Pro runners.

Alex Davison ended the day’s running eighth aboard the Gulf Racing UK Porsche that the Australian shares with Michael Wainwright and Ben Barker.

Porsche also topped the GTE-Pro class with laps late in the day demoting the Ganassi Ford GTs after they’d run 1-2-3-4 throughout the morning.

The Earl Bamber, Patrick Pilet, Nicky Tandy and Dirk Werner driven #93 Porsche proved the quickest in class, while Ryan Briscoe and co-driver Richard Westbrook finished sixth in GTE-Pro in the #69 Ford GT.

In the LMP1 class Toyota topped the timesheets with the Fernando Alonso, Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and Jose Maria Lopez leading the way in the TS050-Hybrid.

The Japanese marque’s second car was only third fastest, split by a non-hybrid LMP1 Rebellion R-13 Gibson.

With the day serving only as a test, teams will return to Le Mans next week as practice and qualifying begins for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16-17.

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

A fuel only strategy call saw Felipe Nasr and Eric Curran win the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Belle Isle.

Stopping as the window opened, the Cadillac DPi opted against tyres before rejoining in clear track to gain the upper hand over early leaders Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves.

When it came to their stop, Penske opted for four tyres and fuel trailing the Nasr/Curran entry home by just over a second.

In GTD class, Mario Farnbacher and Katherine Legge combined for victory in the Acura NSX GT3, heading a 1-2 for the team from Lawson Aschenbach and Justin Marks.

Kenny Habul and Bernd Schneider crossed the line eighth in GTD aboard SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Watkins Glen hosts the next round of the championship on June 28-July 1.

DTM

A chaotic second DTM race in Hungary was won by Marco Wittmann after the race was initially red flagged for a series of pit lane crashes.

Starting dry, rain began falling early in the race with a number of drivers taking to pit lane.

Luis Auer collided with the pit building, and injured a marshal in the incident, forcing an ambulance into pit lane.

That saw officials deploy the Safety Car, but not before a number of other cars had taken to the lane.

Among them, Edoardo Mortara hit a pit gantry while Bruno Spengler also had a spill.

As chaos ensued in pit lane, the red flag was shown.

“An injured marshal has severe leg injuries,” DTM announced following the red flag. “Two further people have medium-level injuries.

“None of the injured people is in critical condition, they are all being transported to hospital.”

The three drivers who had incidents in pit lane also found themselves excluded from the final results, Auer having led at the restart, stating “the driver must reduce speed as soon as he joins the deceleration zone so that he can stop his car at the pits without endangering other participants or the marshals.”

It left Wittman to take the win from Timo Glock and Philipp Eng.

Earlier, Paul Di Resta won the opening race of the weekend, chasing down his Mercedes team-mate Nico Muller following their pit stops to head a 1-2 for the team.

European Formula 3

British drivers Enaan Ahmed and Daniel Ticktum shared the European Formula 3 Championship spoils at the Hungaroring.

Ticktum won the opening race over Guanyu Zhou and Robert Shvartzman before Ahmed won races two and three across the remainder of the weekend.

Starting from pole, Ticktum eased out to a more than seven second advantage in Race 1 before brake failure ruled him out of Race 2.

Off the front row, Ahmed got the jump at the start in Race 2, going on to claim his maiden series win.

He then backed up that performance in the final race of the weekend, with Ticktum bouncing back to second ahead of Mick Schumacher.

New Zealander Marcus Armstrong recovered from a DNF in Race 1 to finish second in Race 2.

The European Formula 3 Championship now heads to Norisring in Germany on June 23-24 for Round 3.

Italian Formula 4

Jack Doohan finished sixth in the opening Italian Formula 4 Championship race at Monza, before falling down the order in races two and three.

The Aussie was the first rookie home in Race 1, before becoming embroiled in a scrap following a safety car interruption in Race 2 which saw him home in 11th place.

Doohan had climbed to fifth in the opening laps of Race 3 only to fall down the order following another mid-race safety car.

Leonardo Lorandi won races one and three, with William Alatalo claiming Race 2.

New Zealand Rally Championship

Holden Barina driver Josh Marston won Rally Canterbury after surviving difficult conditions in the final stage.

Marton and co-driver Andrew Graces spun earlier in the day before regrouping to win the rally and move into third in the championship.

Australian Nathan Quinn was second in the Ford Fiesta Proto with co-driver David Calder, while rally leader heading into the final stage, Raana Horan, dropped to third in the final results.

Follow Holden driver Greg Murphy also had a spell in the lead of the event on his way to fourth, a personal-best result in rallying for the four-time Bathurst 1000 winner.

The Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship continues with the South Canterbury Rally on June 23.

Moto2, Moto3

Miguel Oliveira took a stunning first win of the season in Moto2, from 11th on the grid.

The KTM rider gained six positions on the run to the first corner alone and another two by the end of the lap.

He was running second when Mattia Pasini lost the front end of his Italtrans Kalex at San Donato on Lap 14.

Oliveira still had work to do, however, eventually prevailing by less than two tenths of a second after a thrilling battle with Lorenzo Baldassarri (Pons Kalex).

In Moto3, just 0.043s separated the top three at the finish as Jorge Martin edged Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio di Giannantonio.

Francesco Bagnaia leads the Moto2 title race and Bezzecchi Moto3 ahead of the next round in Barcelona on June 15-17.

Isle of Man TT

Michael Dunlop claimed his 16th Isle of Man TT victory in Saturday’s RST Superbike race.

Dunlop finished 51 seconds ahead of Conor Cummins with James Hillier third.

The win comes just three days after the death of Dunlop’s BMW team mate Dan Kneen in practice.

Ben and Tom Birchall claimed honours in the opening Locate.im Formula Two Sidecar race, breaking both and lap and race records in the process.

Monster Energy Supersport TT Race will be out on course on Monday for the first of their two races, with the second coming on Wednesday.

American Rally Association Series

Australian Chris Atkinson suffered a disqualification in Susquehannok Trail Performance Rally.

Atkinson sat third after Day 1, however, struck drama in Day 2 as his car began to overheat late in proceedings.

In Parc Fermé, Atkinson’s team began working to refill his radiator which ultimately led to him being excluded under Rally Competition Rule (RCR) 4.10.3.

The regulation states, “Except where specifically provided for elsewhere in the regulations, while the vehicles are subject to Parc Fermé rules, any repair, assistance or refueling is strictly forbidden, under penalty of exclusion.”

David Higgins took the rally victory, with the series’ next round at the New England Forest Rally from July 20-21.
