Australian Joey Mawson boosted his German F4 title chances by scoring his third victory of the season at the Sachsenring.
Mawson rocketed from seventh on the grid to third in the opening laps of the weekend’s final race before eventually overhauling leader Kim Luis Schramm on the penultimate lap.
The victory capped off a solid weekend that had seen Mawson fourth in Race 1 and third in Race 2.
Mawson now sits 37 points behind championship leader Marvin Dienst with 150 still up for grabs in the final two events.
“The last race was a crazy one,” reflected Mawson after a final heat that had included three Safety Car periods.
“I managed to get a good start and go from seventh to third in the first lap but then on the Safety Car restart I had a gear selection problem and lost three spots, two of which were to my championship rivals.
“I had some really good speed on board and managed to get past both of my championship rivals in the next few laps.
“Then on the final restart I was on a bit of a rampage and determined to take the win and I moved into lead on the penultimate lap.
“It was probably the best victory I’ve ever had, it was hard work but very rewarding.
“I’m really looking forward to the next round at Oschersleben where we started the championship and we recorded a one-two finish with my team-mate Mick Schumacher.”
DTM
Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller broke a two-year winless streak with victory in Sunday’s DTM race at Moscow Raceway.
The former champion put in a commanding drive from pole position, eventually leading home Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Mattias Ekstrom (Audi).
Ekstrom made a late move on Maxime Martin’s BMW to claim the final podium spot and retake the championship lead.
The Swede had endured a disastrous run on Saturday, earning a three-place grid penalty for the second race after a tangle with Timo Glock.
The opening encounter was won by Mercedes driver Pascal Wehrlein from BMW duo Marco Wittmann and Bruno Spengler.
Pirelli World Challenge
James Davison scored a pair of top 10 finishes in the penultimate weekend of the season for the Pirelli World Challenge at Sonoma.
The PWC field ran two races in support of the IndyCar finale, where Kevin Estre (McLaren) and Renger van der Zande (Porsche) took a win apiece.
Davison (Always Evolving Nissan) recorded a seventh and a sixth from the two heats to sit third in the standings ahead of the final round at Laguna Seca on September 11-13.
Cadillac driver Jonny O’Connell continues to lead the way with 1625 points ahead of the Ferrari mounted Olivier Beretta (1599) and Davison (1490).
