A trio of former Formula 1 drivers will be reunited with cars from their past at this year’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
Stefan Johansson, Ivan Capelli and Pierluigi Martini will conduct demonstration runs in classic machinery that featured when Adelaide hosted the Australian Grand Prix.
The Adelaide Motorsport Festival will be held from November 19-20.
Swedish ace Johansson, who clocked up 79 starts and 12 podium finishes, will step behind the wheel of a Ferrari 156/85 he drove during the 1985 season at the Victoria Park circuit.
The car guided him to fifth in the inaugural F1 race on the Adelaide streets.
“Truly the best event in the best era of Formula One,” recalled Johansson of the F1 races in Adelaide ahead of his return to Australia.
“I can’t wait to return to the City of Adelaide again. It has such good memories for me.”
Capelli is set to drive a Judd V8 powered Leyton House he piloted during the 1989 season.
The Italian scored three podium finishes during an F1 career that spanned from 1985-1993.
Countryman Martini will return to the cockpit of a Minardi Cosworth V8 that propelled him to third on the grid at the 1989 Australian Grand Prix.
Martini spent eight seasons racing for Minardi before announcing his retirement from F1 at the end of the 1995 season.
“It has been a mammoth task,” event spokesman Tim Possingham told Speedcafe.com.
“The cars are difficult to access at the best of times let alone the drivers that drove them back in the day.
“This is a theme we will continue in the future and we are already working on next year’s event.”
The trio will be joined by a selection of F1 cars from the 1985-1995 period.
A grid of iconic Australian touring cars are also expected to feature at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
Details of the cars attending will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
