As the curtain comes down on the NASCAR career of Marcos Ambrose, the Tasmanian has vowed to enjoy his remaining races on high speed ovals.

Heading into the Kansas round this weekend, the tri-oval built in 2001 is one of four 1.5 mile (2.4km) high speed circuits remaining in the season along with Charlotte (October 11), Texas (November 2) and the finale at Homestead (November 16).

In between, Ambrose will see his final Sprint Cup starts at the 2.6 mile (4.28km) Talladega Speedway (October 19), the .5 mile (.8km) Martinsville track (October 26) and 1 mile (1.6km) Phoenix layout (November 9).

In 10 previous starts at Kansas Ambrose has recorded two top 10 finishes and he has always had an affinity with the intense speeds at the 1.5 mile ovals.

“My approach for these final races is to enjoy driving the car, enjoy my crew and enjoy the people around me in the garage,” Ambrose said.

“One of things that I’ve enjoyed the most is racing at the speeds we do at a track like Kansas, Charlotte, Texas and Homestead.

“We have all those races left, and it’s incredible to race at the speeds we do at these tracks. I’m going to miss that.

“Kansas was really fast after they repaved it, but now it’s a place that has multiple grooves and good racing.

“The racing is intense, and there are a lot of guys racing for the championship.

“I expect those guys to be up front or take chances to be up front.

“Hopefully, we can be there with them.”

Ambrose, 38, was confirmed two weeks ago as the driver in the new Team Penske/Dick Johnson Racing alliance in V8 Supercars next season.

The announcement brings an end to Ambrose’s NASCAR career which began in the truck series in 2006 before climbing the stock car ladder.

He has compiled five Nationwide Series and two Sprint Cup victories during his time in the US.
