An Audi rally prototype developed in the fearsome Group B era 30 years ago will undertake its first competitive start at the Eifel Rally Festival at Daun in Germany from tomorrow.
The Audi Group S is a mid-engine machine which will be handled by double German champion Harald Demuth in the event that is renowned for being the pinnacle of historical rallying events.
Planned to be introduced for the 1987 season when Group B would be separated from Group S, the project was abandoned following a serious non-Audi crash at the Portugal rally.
On safety grounds the FIA decided not to sanction either Group B or the proposed Group S for 1987.
The Group S Audi uses a space frame, plastic bodywork and a four-valve turbo engine.
Other Audis featured at Daun include an Audi Sport quattro from 1984 while a quattro S1 from 1985 will be on show in the paddock.
