Jenson Button has shed some more light on the role he holds with the Williams Formula 1 team.

The 2009 world champion has returned to the team with which he made his debut in 2000 as a 20-year-old, now as a Senior Advisor.

At the time of the announcement in January, the team stated that it would be able to call on his experience to offer advice and guidance at the team, along with supporting its drivers.

Button himself has now explained his role with the world championship winning operation, which has undergone a significant restructuring in recent months.

“I’m definitely not going to be there to tell George [Russell] how to drive,” he told Sky Sports.

“There’s so much behind the scenes from the experience that I have of working with, many different teams over the years, many different team-mates, engineers aerodynamicists, and I think it’s more the atmosphere within the team it’s something that I’m sure I can help with.”

The team is now headed by Jost Capito, who has formerly worked with McLaren, and Simon Roberts.

Capito has slotted in as chief executive officer, while Roberts has continued in the team principal’s role he took on following Dorilton Capital’s purchase of the business last year.

“It’s great to see Jost within the team he’s got a lot of experience of racing in many different categories around the world, and I think he definitely brings a lot of excitement to the team and a lot of positive energy,” said Button.

“There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on, [I’ve] been speaking to Jost a lot.”

Williams last week announced the signing of Francois-Xavier ‘FX’ Demaison as technical director, the Frenchman due to start with the team next month.

The Mercedes-powered squad failed to score points at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on the weekend, Russell placing 14th and Nicholas Latifi not making it to the chequered flag.
