Roland Dane says that James Courtney still has a lot to prove in V8 Supercars, despite going into this weekend’s season-finale as the favourite to end Jamie Whincup’s championship dominance.
While Courtney holds a 53 point lead over Whincup with just two races remaining, the TeamVodafone boss has labeled Courtney’s series approach as “boring.”
“For an awful lot of the year, James hasn’t looked like he has the ultimate pace,” Dane told Speedcafe.com.au.
“He has just played a pretty boring percentage game a lot of the time – like Rick Kelly did in 2006. At least (Mark) Winterbottom has had a real go, but Courtney still has to prove himself, not Jamie.”
Dane says the only time that Courtney has looked like a genuine threat was during the Sprint tyre races at Queensland Raceway and Winton in May – and the last race at Sandown.
“Jamie is the only one who has proved to be fast. Courtney, in particular at the Sprint tyre rounds earlier in the year, proved to be very fast there, but the only other time that he’s looked remotely like a real winner was the last race at Sandown where he did a very good job,” he said.
