Davies wins Carrera Cup smash fest

Shae Davies has come through to win the final race and the round of the Carrera Cup after a chaotic final race at Mount Panorama.

The race literally came apart after a re-start when Nick Foster triggered a four-car crash that involved champion and race leader Warren Luff, title contender Steven Richards and David Russell.

Foster made an ambitious move at the end of Mountain Straight and slid into Luff, with both cars then running off and into Richards and Russell.

All four drivers were OK, but a furious Richards confronted Foster after getting out of his car which was buried deep in the tyre barrier at Castrol EDGE Griffins Bend.

Davies took the win from a delighted Michael Almond in second and defending Carrera Cup champion Craig Baird in third.

Although Baird has just one round win at Sydney Motorsport Park to his credit, he has finished every race this year and sits just 31 points behind Luff in the title chase.

Despite the crash, Luff still finished third overall for the round.

“I was not even looking for Foster heading into the corner,” said Luff.

“The fact that it took out the top four cars says it all really.

“Overall I have had a weekend I would rather forget with this being my second big crash on the same corner.

“To still be third overall and actually extend the points lead is a surprise, but as Craig Baird continues to show, collecting points all the time is critical to winning the championship.”

Earlier Michael Patrizi made hard contact with the wall exiting the Dipper. This was the incident that brought the Safety Car onto the circuit. Patrizi was taken to the medical centre with reports of sore ribs.

One driver who kept out of all the dramas across the weekend was Shane Smollen who won the Elite category from championship leader Stephen Grove and Brenton Ramsay.

The final round of the Carrera Cup will be on the streets of Surfers Paradise as part of the Castrol EDGE Gold Coast 600 meeting in a fortnight’s time.
