Retired motorcycling great Mick Doohan will partner V8 Supercars star Jamie Whincup in Australia’s Race of Champions team for the second consecutive year.
This year will mark the five-time world motorcycle champion’s fourth appearance at the end-of-season event having also competed in the 2009 and 2010 editions.
The 48-year-old Doohan managed to outshine his younger team-mate in 2012, progressing to the semi-finals of the individual competition before being iliminated by Michael Schumacher.
Doohan and Whincup had together made the semi-finals of the previous night’s Nation’s Cup, where they were beaten by the eventual winning team of Germans Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.
“It’s a real privilege to be coming back to the Race Of Champions and to have another chance to team up with Jamie, who lives near me on the Gold Coast,” said Doohan.
“Of course it’s tough for a bike racer to come up against so many great drivers but I’ll be determined not to let the side down.
“I don’t get too much competitive action these days but I have a kart circuit at home and I have a buggy with a 600cc engine so I’ll try to get out on that when I can.”
Doohan is the 10th driver confirmed for December 14-15 event with Schumacher, Tom Kristensen, Sebastian Ogier, Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhok, Susie Wolf, David Coulthard and Mattias Ekstrom also on the all-star list.
This year will mark the second time that the event is held in Bangkok, Thailand.
