Carl Edwards, carrying the memory of Dick Trickle on his car, has claimed the pole for the All-Star NASCAR race at Charlotte.
Edwards clocked the fastest time under the new qualifying system ahead of Kurt Busch.
Edwards’ Roush Fenway team-mate Greg Biffle was third fastest.
Aussie Marcos Ambrose will start from 17th in his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford.
Under the new rules for the non-championship All-Star race the drivers had to perform three flying laps including a mandatory four-tyre-change pitstop.
Three more drivers who progress through the Showdown qualifying race will join the 19 drivers who qualified for the All-Star race.
These will be comprised of the winner of the fan vote and the top two Showdown placegetters.
